1 - The Banyan Tree

The college ground was filled with noise.

Some students were asking about their classes, while others were making new friends. A few corners of the ground were occupied by seniors who were ragging juniors. Because of them, some new students were trying their best to stay away from their sight.

The weather was cloudy, and the wind was blowing fast. It was strong enough to blow the fallen leaves across the ground. The sky was covered with grey clouds, and the air felt cool and fresh.

Suddenly, the wind started blowing much faster, and the sky became darker. The trees began to sway, and dry leaves flew across the ground. The cool air became stronger, and it felt like rain might start soon.

The students who were outside the college buildings or on the playground looked up at the sky. Most of them stopped what they were doing and started walking back inside the college.

At the same time, the birds also started flying back to the trees. Their chirping mixed with the voices of the students.

"Yaar, aaj to practice hi nahi ho payegi," one of the girls said with a disappointed sigh as she looked up at the dark clouds.

~ "Practice won't be possible today."

"Don't worry, babe. I have a plan," the other girl replied with a confident smile as she walked toward the college hallway.

She walked calmly, her curly hair moving gently with the breeze. The sound of her heels echoed even in the busy corridor; somehow it was standing out even among the students talking and laughing. As she passed, many boys and girls turned to look at her. Without saying a word, they stepped aside, giving her enough space to walk through. She noticed the attention and the way everyone moved out of her path. A small smirk appeared on her face as she continued walking.

She stopped at the first-floor hallway, from where the entire college ground could be seen. Resting her arms on the railing, she quietly looked down at the students below. The ground, which had been full of chatter just moments ago, suddenly felt quieter.

Almost every face turned toward her. Some students whispered to each other, while others quickly looked away the moment their eyes met hers. A few even lowered their head.

She looked at the girl standing beside her and smiled.

"Did you see this?" she asked, her voice calm but full of pride. "I love seeing this fear in people's eyes when they look at me. This is the power Nisha holds."

Just as she finished speaking, a loud clap of thunder echoed across the sky. A bolt of lightning struck the old banyan tree near the college gate, making everyone jump in shock.

She slowly turned toward the gate and watched the scene below. She shuddered for a moment at the crack of thunder, but she appeared composed.

The banyan tree suddenly caught fire. Bright orange flames spread quickly through its dry branches, and thick black smoke rose into the sky. She looked at the burning tree without saying a word and slowly tilted her head.

Fear spread across the campus in just a few moments. Students who had been standing outside started running inside the college building, shouting for others to move. The ground, which had been full of noise only a few minutes ago, now felt almost empty.

The laughter, conversations, and footsteps had all disappeared. Even the seniors who had been ragging and teasing the freshers stopped immediately. No one cared about anything else anymore. Every face turned toward the banyan tree, and everyone's eyes were fixed on the flames.

Suddenly, they heard the loud roar of a motorbike engine. Everyone turned to look. A bike sped into the college grounds, as if the rider hadn't even noticed the flames of the burning banyan tree.

The rider did not slow down. As the bike passed under the banyan tree, a large burning branch suddenly cracked and fell. For a moment, it looked like the bike would be crushed. But the rider was moving so fast that the bike shot forward just in time, narrowly missing the falling branch. The burning wood crashed onto the ground behind the bike, sending sparks and ash into the air.

The bike continued across the college ground without stopping, leaving everyone standing there in complete shock.

"Ye kaun hai, bhai, jo aandhi ki tarah aaya hai?" one boy asked, his eyes wide with surprise.

~ "Who is he, bro, who came in like a storm?"

"'Aaya' nahi, bhai... 'aayi' hai. Udhar dekh," the other boy said with a smirk. He caught his friend's chin between his fingers, turned his face toward the bike rider, and made him look in her direction.

~ "Not 'he', bro... it's 'she'. Look over there."

The rider slowly took off her helmet, and her silky dark brown hair fell freely over her shoulders. A gentle breeze caught the loose strands, making them wave in the air. At that very moment, the first drops of rain began to fall.

Everyone who had been staring at the burning banyan tree now found their eyes drawn to the mysterious girl.

She looked up as the rain grew heavier, letting the cool drops fall on her face. Then she turned her gaze back to the burning banyan tree. The raindrops fell on the fire, and the flames slowly became smaller. The fire that had been burning so fiercely was now losing its strength as the rain continued to fall. Smoke rose into the air while the flames slowly started dying down.

A raindrop landed in her eye, making her close it for a moment. Instead of wiping it away, she smiled softly.

"How beautiful..." one boy murmured while standing beside Nisha.

Hearing this, Nisha slowly turned her head toward him, tilting it slightly. The boy suddenly felt the atmosphere become tense and looked at her. Nisha was staring at him with her arms crossed.

The moment their eyes met, he quickly looked down.

She stepped closer to him and slowly whispered in his ear, "Nisha. Remember the name. I think you forgot who I am, and that's why you made this mistake."

After saying that, she stepped back and gave him a small smirk. The boy was still standing there with his head lowered, not daring to look at her.

Nisha looked at him again, walked closer, and placed her heel on his toe.

A sharp pain shot through him, making him almost groan, but he quickly pressed his lips together and stayed silent.

Nisha stepped back and turned her attention toward the girl who was entering the college.

"See Nisha, how they all are looking at her. Like never seen a girl."

Nisha looked around, noticing how everyone's attention had shifted from her to the mysterious biker girl. Instead of getting angry, she simply smiled and glanced at her wristwatch.

"No matter who comes, no one can ever take Nisha's place." She said it with complete confidence crossing her arms.

Her eyes moved back toward Yutika for a moment. There was no anger in them.

"Let them look," she murmured with a small smile. "A few minutes of attention doesn't change who runs this place."

Saying this, she looked toward the banyan tree. The fire that had been burning a while ago was now completely gone, and the rain was pouring down heavily.

As she entered through the college door, everyone on the ground floor turned their eyes toward her.

She was wearing a crop top with baggy jeans and a jacket over it. Her clothes were wet from the rain, and the jacket covered most of her top. Her wet hair fell around her face, with a few strands sticking to her neck, making her look even more striking.

The people who had been watching the banyan tree, still shocked by the sudden bolt of lightning strike moments ago, were now even more surprised. They couldn't take their eyes off her.

"Yaar, she is Yutika, right?" one boy said in surprise. "Oh my god, people were right. She is really so beautiful."

"Yutika?" another boy asked.

"Yes, Yutika Bora. Daughter of Mr Ashwin Bora. Don't you know him? He is a businessman."

"Ohhh, him? I know the name," the second boy said. "But I didn't know his daughter joined our college. I mean, he is the richest man around here. He can send her anywhere. She could study in a big city, right? Why here in Dibrugarh? I even heard that she studied in England, right? Then why suddenly coming back to India? That even here."

"Hmmm... maybe because her mother passed away two months ago?" the first boy said quietly. "I heard that from someone. Maybe that's why she came back."

The second boy looked at Yutika again and smiled foolishly.

"Whatever the reason is, she is really very pretty. I wish she would become my girlfriend."

Another boy laughed. "Girlfriend? Bro, have you already fallen for her? Like seriously? But honestly, she is too beautiful."

Nearby, some girls were watching all this silently. They did not like how every boy was staring at Yutika without even blinking.

"Hey, Nisha."

A boy walked over to Nisha and stood beside her, casually resting a hand on her shoulder.

"What?" Nisha asked, turning to look at him.

Her voice wasn't arrogant or cold like it had been a moment ago. Instead, she gave him a soft, gentle smile. There was something different about her now. The Nisha who had been standing there just a moment ago, cold and fearful, seemed to have completely disappeared.

"You know, today's talk around college isn't about you," he said in a teasing tone.

But there was something behind his words. It felt less like simple teasing and more like he was trying to make Nisha doubt herself.

This time, Nisha's expression changed. The gentle smile disappeared from her face. She slowly turned towards him and crossed her arms over her chest.

"You know what, Vikram?" she said, her voice calm but firm. "There is only one Nisha, and there is only one place that belongs to me. And obviously, I will hold on to that place forever. I am not going to let it slip out of my hands this easily."

She looked straight at him.

"So, remember one thing. No one,,, no one can ever take my place. Got it?" Her tone was filled with confidence. Without waiting for a reply, she turned around and walked away.

Vikram stood there, watching her leave.

"Nisha, your days are numbered now. You can write that down," he said with a smirk.

He leaned against the railing, resting both his elbows on it as he watched her walk away. The smirk on his face grew wider, as if he already knew exactly what was coming next.
